# Provenance and lineage

> The evidence trail behind a current answer, a correction, a citation, and a restore.

Provenance answers: who said this, where did it appear, which document and location support it, when was it processed, and which version replaced it? Lineage connects a current record to its predecessors, source events, and corrections.

A document citation carries document version, chunk, section, and page when the source has a real page. A restore check verifies both an active record and the archived original document checksum. Embeddings are derived; their model and dimension are retained so they can be rebuilt safely.
